On the rare occasion that I've come across a pirate/merchant galleon, they have always travelled at the same speed as my Gargoyle ship so I've never been able to stop one of them. The only chance of gaining/catching up is if they have to stop due to a dolphin etc. I thought they were supposed to be a bit slower so you can pull along side them and use side cannons etc?

I'm not sure if they are supposed to travel this fast or maybe I'm not attacking them correctly.

I've taken a short video which is too large to attach, but it shows my galleon trying to chase one of the merchant ships. In this video my speed is set by the 'forward' command and I can't catch up - it's travelling at the exact same speed.

Use: "Start Tracking" command and it will notify you when NPC ships are in range and their heading, also the In-Game radar map is much better for spotting them before they become aware of you. Tactics are key, try to attack from behind to avoid cannon fire. Take note of nearest shoreline before you engage in the event you need to repair your vessel. Rowboat is handy, with multiple toons or players, you can use a rowboat to block NPC ship movement and trap them.
All ships are the same speed, differences are with storage, cannon placement and damage. The Tokuno Ship gives a 12% Bonus to fishing and the Brit Galleon allows house addon placement. I made some docs to serve as a ships guide, with info I found on the net.
